There are countless aspects of former Burma that catch one’s attention. We have chosen 10 interesting facts that are sure to surprise you as soon as you arrive: <\/p>\n

#1. – They apply Thanakha to their faces<\/h3>\n

Virtually the entire population, especially women and children, wear a cream on their faces and arms which, according to them, serves as both sunscreen and makeup. Its name is Thanakha<\/em> and it is obtained from the tree of the same name by mixing the bark with water. Regardless of its stated purpose, it is possibly the most purchased product by locals. It is so widespread that after a few days, you feel like the odd one out for not using it.
\n\"child<\/p>\n

#2. – Chewing tobacco or Betel<\/h3>\n

Here is the second one, this time for the men: Betel<\/em>. Tobacco mixed with lime and wrapped in paan leaves. Locals chew this at all hours. The result is a red liquid that they have to spit out constantly. They will tell you it is perfect for digestion, but the truth is that it is a quite powerful and very, very addictive drug. That is why everyone seems to need their “digestive” at all times.

#3. – They greet each other with kisses<\/h3>\n

From the moment you set foot in the country, you realize something different is happening. You pay attention and think everyone is blowing kisses at you. But you soon realize it is the way they call out to one another. Fun and friendly, you cannot help but smile every time you hear it, and you will quickly find yourself practicing it too. <\/p>\n

#4. – They do not wear trousers, but longyis<\/h3>\n

It is possible that not a single pair of trousers is sold in Myanmar. Everyone wears the famous longyi, a piece of fabric sewn into a tube shape that they skillfully knot at the waist. However, do not try to do it yourself unless you want to be the center of all eyes and laughter. <\/p>\n

#5. – Riding motorcycles is prohibited<\/h3>\n

In Yangon, riding a motorcycle is prohibited. Being in Asia, this is very strange, but upon inquiring, we were told that some years ago, an army officer was accidentally hit and killed. Following its reputation, the government decided to ban the use of motorcycles throughout the city. We all know how the government operates…

#6. – They drive on the right<\/h3>\n

The cars. Possibly the most ridiculous point of all. Traffic flows on the right, as in most European countries. However, the driver also sits on the right, as in England and other Asian countries. This makes driving complicated, especially overtaking, which is why buses require the assistance of a second man to indicate when it is safe to pass. <\/p>\n

#7. – There are very few ATMs<\/h3>\n

It is truly difficult to find ATMs in Myanmar. There are some in Yangon and Mandalay, but in the rest of the country, it can become an impossible mission. Although there is practically no difference now, some time ago the gap between the official exchange rate and the black market could be as much as 15 times. For your trip to Myanmar<\/a>, remember to exchange most of your money at the airport, but keep some dollars to pay for certain entrance fees where only dollars are accepted. <\/p>\n

#8. – The kindness of its people<\/h3>\n

The people of Myanmar are by far the kindest in all of Asia. We must assume that in a few years, with the arrival of mass tourism, money will affect their character in the same way it has in most countries in the region. For now, we are left with the selfless kindness of them all.

#9. – There are few hostels<\/h3>\n

There are areas where it is truly difficult to find accommodation. Monywa, for example, only has one hostel for foreigners, and it is impossible to negotiate the price. In most destinations, however, it is very easy to reach a good agreement for a room. <\/p>\n

#10. – Curious telephone booths<\/h3>\n

Finding a small table in the middle of the street with several telephones plugged into the lamppost behind is a common sight. Let us remember that not everyone has the possibility of owning a mobile phone. Therefore, these street “call centers” are very useful. It is quite curious to see 4 or 5 telephones of the type our grandparents used sitting on a camping table, waiting for customers.

\nAbove all else, what surprises most about the country is its people. We have no words to describe the kindness, generosity, and friendliness of the Burmese. Simply wonderful.
