For centuries, its location along this major river has fostered trade, agriculture, and transportation, but it has also required the development of dike systems and other infrastructure to cope with flooding. Water is an integral part of the city’s historical fabric; it is not merely a decorative element of its landscape.

The name Hà Nội came into official use in 1831, during the reign of Minh Mạng. It is often interpreted as a reference to a territory located inland or between waterways—a name particularly fitting for a city linked to the Red River and surrounded by lakes, former riverbeds, and wetlands.

Hanoi has also been called the “Paris of Asia” because of the architectural legacy left by the French colonial period. However, that comparison explains only a small part of its identity. The Old Quarter, the Confucian and Buddhist temples, the ancient imperial structures, and traditional Vietnamese architecture play an equally important—if not more important—role in shaping the capital’s character.

From Thăng Long to Hanoi: Over a Thousand Years of History

One of the defining moments in Hanoi’s history occurred in 1010. Emperor Lý Thái Tổ decided to move the capital from Hoa Lư to the ancient citadel of Đại La and named the new political center Thăng Long, which is usually translated as “rising dragon.”

The choice was not random. The area was strategically located within the Red River Delta, had good river transportation links, and offered the best prospects for developing a major capital. During the subsequent dynasties, Thăng Long established itself as one of Vietnam’s major political and cultural centers.

The current Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long preserves part of that long history. The complex brings together archaeological remains and structures from different periods and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Its various layers allow us to trace the evolution of Hanoi through centuries of dynastic and political changes.

A city that changed its name but retained its importance

Over the centuries, the city has been known by various names and has weathered dynastic changes, wars, and administrative reorganizations. In 1831, the name Hà Nội was established as part of a sweeping territorial reorganization promoted by Emperor Minh Mạng. The old name, Thăng Long, however, never faded from Vietnamese cultural memory.

Subsequently, the French colonial presence transformed a significant portion of the urban landscape. Broad avenues, administrative buildings, villas, and structures such as the Hanoi Opera House added a new architectural layer. Following the conflicts of the 20th century and independence, Hanoi ultimately established itself as the capital of reunified Vietnam and continued to grow far beyond its historic core.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the True Legend of the Sword

“
” Right in the heart of Hanoi lies Hoàn Kiếm, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Its name roughly translates to “Lake of the Returned Sword” or “Restored Sword” and stems from one of the most popular legends in Vietnamese history.

It is important to distinguish this account from the story of Lý Thái Tổ and the founding of Thăng Long in 1010. The legend of the lake is linked to Lê Lợi, later known as Emperor Lê Thái Tổ, who led the rebellion against the Ming dynasty’s occupation in the 15th century.

According to legend, a sword of supernatural origin helped Lê Lợi during the war against the Ming. Once victory was achieved, as he was sailing across the lake, a golden turtle appeared to claim the weapon and return it to its divine owner. The king then handed over the sword, and this episode ultimately gave the lake its name, Hoàn Kiếm.

Ngọc Sơn, the Red Bridge, and the Turtle Tower

The legend still lives on in the lake’s landscape. On one of its small islets stands the famous Turtle Tower, while in the northern part of the lake stands the Ngọc Sơn Temple, connected to the shore by the distinctive red Thê Húc Bridge.

The temple was not built specifically to honor the legendary turtle, as is sometimes claimed. It is associated with various religious, cultural, and military figures, including General Trần Hưng Đạo. The combination of history, spirituality, and folk tradition makes this complex one of the most symbolic sites in Hanoi.

Hanoi’s lakes are part of everyday life

Hoàn Kiếm is the lake best known to visitors to the capital, but it is far from being the only one. The enormous Hồ Tây, or West Lake, and the nearby Trúc Bạch are two other key features of the urban landscape. The lakes serve as places for people to meet, relax, and socialize within a particularly dense and dynamic city.

Early in the morning, it’s common to see people walking, jogging, or exercising along the water. As evening falls, the shores fill with families, couples, and groups of friends. Cafés, small restaurants, pagodas, and promenades take advantage of this connection to the landscape. To truly understand Hanoi, it’s worth setting aside some time to observe daily life around its lakes.

West Lake offers a different perspective from that of the historic center. Its vast expanse, its promenades, and the temples located in its surroundings allow visitors to escape the hustle and bustle of the Old Quarter for a few hours. This constant shift between noise and tranquility is one of the most distinctive contrasts of the Vietnamese capital.

The Old Quarter: Hanoi at its most intense

North of Hoan Kiem Lake begins the Old Quarter, one of Hanoi’s most distinctive areas. Traditionally, it was linked to merchant and artisan guilds, and many streets specialized in particular goods. Commercial activity continues to define much of the quarter , although its appearance and businesses have changed over time.

Walking through this area forces you to adapt to the city’s pace: motorcycles, food stalls, small shops, narrow homes, altars, street vendors, and cafes all share a limited space. It’s best to explore it without rushing, because much of its charm lies in the details of the streets and not just in the monuments marked on the map.

The Old Quarter also offers a glimpse into one of the greatest expressions of local culture: its cuisine. Dishes such as phở and bún chả, along with the famous egg coffee, are part of a culinary scene closely tied to street life. Eating and drinking coffee in Hanoi are also ways to understand the city’s social rhythms.

Hanoi’s Imperial and Colonial Legacy

To explore beyond the Old Quarter, it’s worth including sites related to different historical periods in your itinerary. The Temple of Literature, founded in the 11th century and linked to the Confucian tradition and the education of ancient scholars, is one of the best examples of the historical importance of education in Vietnam.

The Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long offers a glimpse even further back into the capital’s political history. In other neighborhoods, however, there are buildings associated with the French colonial period, such as the Opera House, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and numerous villas. Hanoi does not have a uniform architectural style because each era has left its own mark on the one that came before it.

This contrast explains why two nearby streets can offer completely different vistas. In just a few minutes, you can go from an area of shopping alleys to a tree-lined avenue, from a traditional temple to a colonial building, or from a historic structure to a contemporary skyscraper. The city as it stands today is the visible result of all these overlapping transformations.

What experiences help you better understand Hanoi

A first visit might focus on the Hoàn Kiếm area and the Old Quarter, but limiting Hanoi to just those two areas leaves out much of its character. Combining heritage, street life, cuisine, and waterfront areas offers a much more complete picture of the capital.

Among the experiences that best illustrate its different facets are the following:

Take a walk around Hoàn Kiếm Lake first thing in the morning to observe daily life before traffic picks up.

Take a walking tour of the Old Quarter and take in its shops, temples, and historic houses.

Visit the Temple of Literature to gain an understanding of the city’s educational and Confucian traditions.

Explore the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel to place the capital’s history in a broader context.

Head to West Lake to discover a more open and peaceful side of Hanoi.

Sample the local cuisine and coffee culture, which are closely tied to the social life of its streets.

Attend a water puppet show, a performing arts tradition rooted in the culture of the Red River Delta.

You don’t have to visit all these places in a single day. Hanoi is best enjoyed by leaving plenty of time to walk around and stop along the way, especially since distances that seem short may actually take longer due to traffic and the hustle and bustle of the streets.

How to Get Around Hanoi on Your First Visit

To get to know the city in some depth, it makes more sense to organize your visits by area rather than trying to check off a long list of landmarks. The area around Hoàn Kiếm and the Old Quarter can take a full day, while the Ba Đình area, the Imperial Citadel, and the Temple of Literature each deserve their own time.

Another day allows you to explore West Lake, Trúc Bạch, and less touristy neighborhoods. The opening hours of temples, museums, and monuments may change, so it’s best to check them before heading out. This flexible itinerary allows you to balance cultural visits with glimpses of everyday life, which are precisely one of Hanoi’s greatest treasures.

It’s also best to accept from the start that traffic is part of the urban experience. Crossing certain streets can be disorienting at first, and you should factor traffic into your estimates of distances. Walking remains one of the best ways to explore the historic center, as long as it is done carefully and long trips are combined with other modes of transportation.

A capital where past and present coexist

Hanoi has changed profoundly since Thăng Long was founded as the capital in 1010, but many of the elements that tell its story remain. The Red River, the lakes, the temples, the old commercial districts, and the ruins of the imperial city continue to coexist with a modern, sprawling metropolis in a state of constant transformation.

Perhaps that is why its main appeal lies precisely in its contrasts: silence next to a temple and traffic just a few streets away; morning exercise around a lake and crowded shops shortly afterward; imperial, colonial, and contemporary architecture all along the same route. Hanoi isn’t a city to be viewed from a single vantage point, but rather one to be discovered little by little.

If you’d like to continue planning your visit, you can expand your itinerary with our guide, “Get to Know Hanoi Inside and Out,” where we cover the capital’s most notable sights. Rather than chasing an endless list of tourist attractions, the best way to experience Hanoi is to set aside time to explore its history, its waterways, and its street life.

According to Thach Lam, a famous Vietnamese writer: “The French have Paris, the English have London, the Chinese have Shanghai.
