Hu\u1ebf is a city located in the geographical centre of Vietnam, exactly halfway between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Although Hu\u1ebf does not appear as a must-see destination in most Vietnam travel guides<\/a> (which place greater emphasis on other places such as Sapa, Ha Long Bay<\/a>, and routes through the Mekong Delta<\/a>), the city of Hu\u1ebf is historically and architecturally significant and well worth visiting. If you are going to spend several weeks in Vietnam or travel extensively across the country, we recommend making a stop in Hu\u1ebf.<\/strong> In this article, we explain what makes this Vietnamese city special and what to do in and around it. <\/p>\n

Vietnam\u2019s imperial capital: Hu\u1ebf<\/h2>\n

Hu\u1ebf has been a key place in the course of Vietnam\u2019s history.<\/strong> The earliest ruins in this area of what is now Vietnam date back almost 1,600 years.<\/p>\n

Feudal Hu\u1ebf in the Middle Ages<\/h3>\n

The first human settlements in the area where Hu\u1ebf stands today date back to the 4th century AD: a city about 3 kilometres west of the current city, known as Kandapurpura. For much of the Middle Ages and until the 19th century, Hu\u1ebf was the capital of several feudal dynasties<\/strong> that ruled much of what is now southern Vietnam, most notably the Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty. <\/p>\n

Hu\u1ebf during French colonisation and the Vietnam War<\/h3>\n

During the French colonisation of Vietnam, which began in 1887, Hu\u1ebf was part of the protectorate of Annam, the name the French gave to Vietnam and the neighbouring areas they controlled. After independence from France, Hu\u1ebf was the country\u2019s capital until 1945, when Emperor B\u1ea3o \u0110\u1ea1i abdicated and the city lost its capital status. The communist government of North Vietnam at the time (the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) established its capital in H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i in 1945, in the north. <\/p>\n

Destruction and death during the Vietnam War<\/h4>\n

Located on the border between South and North Vietnam, Hu\u1ebf suffered significant material and human losses<\/strong> during the Vietnam War<\/a>. The United States carried out extensive indiscriminate bombings that destroyed many of its historical buildings, while the communists perpetrated the Hu\u1ebf massacre during the Tet Offensive\u2014mass executions that went down in history as one of the darkest episodes of the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n

How to get to Hu\u1ebf<\/h2>\n

Hu\u1ebf Airport has no direct connections to Europe, so to get there you will first need to go via Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City<\/strong> and from there take a connecting flight to Hu\u1ebf. You can also travel by train on the well-known Reunification Express that links Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, or (less recommended due to discomfort) take a bus from either of those two cities. <\/p>\n

What to see in Hu\u1ebf<\/h2>\n

Hu\u1ebf is one of Vietnam\u2019s main tourist destinations for travellers who want to experience the historical and cultural side of the countries they visit.<\/strong> Hu\u1ebf is considered Vietnam\u2019s foremost historic city and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as far back as 1993<\/strong>. Its imperial past has left a deep imprint on traditional Vietnamese culture, and Hu\u1ebf is regarded as one of Asia\u2019s gastronomic capitals. <\/p>\n

Hu\u1ebf Citadel<\/h3>\n

The great fortress built in the 17th century by the aforementioned Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty served as a defensive stronghold for the Nguy\u1ec5n for more than 100 years. Its design is reminiscent of Beijing\u2019s Forbidden City, combining palaces, temples, imperial tombs, and walls within the same space.<\/strong> The walls had 10 gates providing access to the citadel. Within the citadel itself there are three enclosures: the imperial city, the civic city or capital, and the Purple City or Forbidden City.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The places included in each and every visit to Hu\u1ebf are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The tombs of Emperors Kh\u1ea3i \u0110\u1ecbnh, Minh M\u1ea1ng, and T\u1ef1 \u0110\u1ee9c<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Thien Mu Pagoda (another must-see icon).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In addition, other interesting spots within the citadel include the following:<\/p>\n

    • H\u01b0ng Mi\u1ebfu Temple<\/strong>, built in honour of Emperor Minh M\u1ea1ng\u2019s parents<\/li>\n
    • Di\u00ean Th\u1ecd Residence<\/strong>, or the Queen Mother\u2019s palace<\/li>\n
    • The Th\u1ebf Mi\u1ebfu Temple<\/strong>, dedicated to generations of the Nguy\u1ec5n dynasty<\/li>\n
    • Hi\u1ec3n L\u00e2m Pavilion<\/strong> and its nine dynastic urns<\/li>\n
    • Th\u00e1i H\u00f2a Palace<\/strong>, where the Nguy\u1ec5n emperors\u2019 throne is located<\/li>\n
    • The Royal Theatre<\/strong>, the emperor and royal court\u2019s entertainment venue<\/li>\n
    • The Royal Library, or Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh L\u00e2u<\/strong>, the emperor\u2019s private reading room<\/li>\n
    • The Forbidden City, or Purple City<\/strong>, so called because only the emperor himself was allowed to enter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The Hu\u1ebf Citadel is so large that it is impossible to visit it all on foot in a single day. The best option is to book a guided tour or rent a bicycle<\/strong> to get around inside efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way.<\/p>\n

      Dong Ba Market<\/h3>\n

      Dong Ba Market is a good place to take the city\u2019s pulse. Dong Ba is located at the southeastern end of the Imperial Citadel and is one of the busiest and most hectic markets in Asia.<\/strong> You can find almost anything at Dong Ba Market. The vendors are expert hagglers and very persistent, so we can assure you that in addition to enjoying the bustle, you will leave the market with something under your arm. <\/p>\n

      The Perfume River<\/h3>\n

      The Perfume River divides the city of Hu\u1ebf in two, and a very appealing way to explore it is by cruising its waters aboard its dragon-shaped boats.<\/strong> If you would like an even more special experience, take a trip along the river at sunset.
