In addition to being the capital of Thailand, Bangkok is the largest and most populous city in the country. It has nearly 10 million inhabitants and is known among Thais as Krung Thep, which means “City of Angels.”

Bangkok was built in 1767, following the fall of the former capital, Ayutthaya. King Rama I established Bangkok in the same style as Ayutthaya. Historically, the capital of Thailand had to be surrounded by rivers, as water transport was the most popular means of travel at the time. Furthermore, it was mandatory to build a royal palace in the very center of the city.

What can you visit in Bangkok?

A stay in Bangkok would not be complete without a visit to its temples. It is an excellent way to better understand the history, art, and culture of the ancient Kingdom of Siam. Start your day in Bangkok with a visit to the Grand Palace and you will not regret it. This palace was formerly the residence of the royal family and is currently used for certain celebrations throughout the year.

Although it is not possible to enter some of its buildings, visitors are welcome at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and other surrounding structures. The architecture and decoration of the complex are spectacular. We recommend going early in the morning to avoid the crowds, and remember that entering the temples and the Grand Palace in sleeveless shirts or shorts above the knee is not permitted.

Not far from the Grand Palace lies the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. We are talking about the largest Reclining Buddha in Thailand. The Temple of the Reclining Buddha, or Wat Pho, was once the most important school for Thai massage and traditional medicine. It is still possible to take professional massage courses there.

Beyond temples and tradition, Bangkok has much, much more to offer. If you are a city lover who enjoys shopping, you will fall in love. Immense shopping malls, local markets, street stalls, and every service are at your disposal. A limitless range of leisure activities is waiting to be explored. For your final purchases and those much-desired travel souvenirs, do not forget to visit Chatuchak Market and the MBK shopping center.

How to get around Bangkok?

To move around the city during your free time, public transport is the best option. Buses, taxis, the Skytrain (BTS), the Metro (MRT), and the famous Tuk tuk will take you wherever you need to go quickly and at a very affordable price.
